The Do's

and Don'ts

Some teachers struggle trying to find good LGBT YA novels that their students will enjoy. Find some great suggestions and places to start here.

Teaching LGBT topics can be challenging and sometimes risky for educators, but all of us, colleagues, students, parents, and community, can work together to make the process/topics smoother, accessible, and safer.

Working with Parents and Community

Attending The College of New Jersey requires all students to take a class to fulfill a gender requirement, and ever since that first Women and Gender Studies (WGS) class, I was hooked. In fact, I picked up a WGS minor and a certification later in my graduate career. Gender and sexuality and everything in between has always fascinated me, and it wasn't until college that I really got to explore any of the topics, which is shocking and scary to think about. Causing a group of people that identify as LGBTQ to feel completely invisible and hardly represented throughout elementary and secondary education sounds ridiculous, and, to me, it absolutely is. I feel that there needs to be a shift in the exposure of LGBT topics in schools, and since I am going to be an English teacher, there needs to be more inclusion of LGBT texts. I chose this topic for this research project because I wanted to know why it hasn't gotten more exposure, how to teach it properly, why it is important, and what resources are out there for parents, teachers, and students. This research has been unbelievably intriguing and only serves to reaffirm my belief that teachers must incoorporate LGBT novels, history, and issues into the classroom.

"For some, teaching LGBT-themed texts seems impossible. They cannot imagine how teachers, especially novice ones, can do this work."
